This guide explains when you can use WHMCS and when you MUST use WHM.

Changing a cPanel Password

Changing a cPanel password is straightforward and can be done directly from WHMCS, provided your WHMCS installation is properly connected to your WHM server through the cPanel/WHM API.

Steps to Change a cPanel Password in WHMCS

  1. Log in to your WHMCS Admin Area.
  2. Navigate to Clients.
  3. Select the client whose hosting account you want to manage.
  4. Click the Products/Services tab.
  5. Select the client's hosting account.
  6. Click Change Password.
  7. Enter the new secure password.
  8. Save the changes.

When you click Change Password, WHMCS communicates with the WHM server via the API and updates the password on the actual cPanel account automatically.

Changing a cPanel Username

Unlike passwords, cPanel usernames cannot be changed from WHMCS.

Although you may be able to edit the username field inside WHMCS, doing so only changes the information stored in WHMCS and does not update the actual cPanel account on the server. This creates a mismatch between WHMCS and WHM and may lead to login failures and provisioning issues.

Why the Username Cannot Be Changed from WHMCS

A cPanel username is deeply integrated into several system components, including:

  • The cPanel account itself
  • The user's home directory (for example: /home/username)
  • Email account paths
  • Database ownership
  • System configuration files
  • Various server permissions

Because of these dependencies, changing a username requires server-level modifications.

How to Change a cPanel Username

A cPanel username should be changed from WHM or via the server command line.

Depending on your server configuration, you can use one of the following methods:

Method 1: Modify the Account in WHM

Some versions of WHM allow administrators to rename the cPanel username using the Modify an Account feature.

Method 2: Create a New cPanel Account

The safest and most commonly recommended approach is to:

  1. Create a new cPanel account with the desired username.
  2. Migrate the website, email accounts, databases, and files to the new account.
  3. Verify everything is working correctly.
  4. Remove the old account once the migration is complete.

This method minimizes the risk of configuration issues.
